Expected Impact
Turning Soft Robotics Innovation into Practical European Value
RESSORT aims to create impact by combining technology maturation with real-world validation, open knowledge exchange, certification planning and market preparation. Its three demonstrators provide focused routes to adoption while the underlying materials, sensing, design, manufacturing and control technologies can generate spillovers into many other applications.
Scientific and Technological Impact
RESSORT will advance knowledge in self-healing elastomers, variable-stiffness structures, tactile sensing, soft-body modelling, uncertainty-aware control and multi-material manufacturing. Integrated datasets, models, test methods and validation evidence will support further research and improve reproducibility across the field.
Industrial and Economic Impact
The project will reduce barriers that prevent soft robotics from progressing beyond laboratory prototypes. By developing manufacturing workflows, interoperable modules, evidence packages, business models and commercialisation roadmaps, RESSORT will support technology transfer, retrofit opportunities, new component offers and future services across healthcare, logistics, inspection and adjacent sectors.
Safety, Health and Well-Being
Compliant and adaptive systems can reduce risks associated with rigid machines and hazardous human tasks. The exosuit aims to improve rehabilitation support and comfort; the food-logistics demonstrator aims to improve safe handling and reduce repetitive strain; and the inspection drone aims to reduce the need for people to enter dangerous or confined spaces.
Environmental Sustainability
Self-healing and repairable components are intended to extend service life and reduce replacement. Sustainability assessment, lifecycle costing, design for disassembly, material screening and end-of-life guidance will be integrated into the project so that performance improvements are evaluated alongside environmental consequences.
Standards, Regulation and Policy
RESSORT will generate test methods, safety evidence and pre-standardisation knowledge relevant to soft robotic materials, components and integrated systems. Dialogue with standards bodies, regulators, notified bodies and aviation stakeholders will support clearer pathways for future certification and responsible uptake.
Skills and Quality Jobs
Training materials, webinars, open resources and demonstrator-based learning will help researchers, engineers, operators and technicians build skills in advanced materials, soft robotics, safe human-robot collaboration, hygienic handling, edge AI and system validation.
European Resilience and Strategic Autonomy
By strengthening European capabilities in advanced materials, robotics components, AI control and manufacturing, the project aims to reduce dependence on fragile supply chains and support European-developed solutions for safety-critical and human-centred robotics.
Open Ecosystem Diffusion
Publications, datasets, code, CAD resources, workflows and training materials will be made available through open channels where legally and commercially appropriate. Links with AI-on-Demand, ADRA, euRobotics, Zenodo and related initiatives will help extend reuse beyond the consortium.
